Dope (2015)

2015 was a year in which people forgot about a lot of very well produced movies. Dope is one of those underrated films. The main character, Malcolm (played by Shameik Moore) carried the movie with his narration. This story as casual as it felt spoke on very solid current issues. Dope is about three high school students, Malcolm (Moore) and his friends that get backed into a difficult situation.
 
Malcolm’s 90’s style obsession confused the present day setting, however once into the story the 90’s music complimented plot. The compounding action adds well to the comical side of this story. They had a lot of bright color schemes and the lighting was also seemingly high.
 
A moment comes when the Malcolm (Moore) pulls out a gun, and reality, seriousness shocks the audience. A very unexpected twisted comes soon after this reality. The conclusion serves as a public service announcement about the flaws of perceiving everything in life through stereotypes, and labels. It allows us to ask ourselves whether we discourage those around us or encourage them.
 
This film marks itself as a necessary and meaningful warning against underestimation. Moore powerfully led this story, and offered a genuine naiveté to Malcolm’s character.
